MUSKOGEE, Okla. — The City of Muskogee created the new Film Muskogee Department to help incentivize and attract filmmakers to create projects in the city.

"If you actually come and film a movie in Muskogee, there's up to a 25K dollar incentive that you can get," said Director of Film Muskogee Bryce Marshall. "We're still trying to crunch down all the numbers as far as the minimum budget. We don't have those numbers just quite yet, but that will be the max you can get. We're also trying to get a TV episode shot here. You can get up to 10K in rebate and also music videos and commercials that will be up to 5K dollars as well."

Film Muskogee is an extension of Visit Muskogee with both departments actively working to attract people to the city.

Marshall said the new department only opened this month and they're currently working on making people aware of this new opportunity.

Marshall specifically emphasized that they're searching for filmmakers of all experiences and backgrounds.

"I think a lot of people right now are kind of under the impression, oh it has to be some kind of big Hollywood movie or something like that, but we're trying to welcome in small town filmmakers. Maybe you're just a student who's trying to get the word out or trying to get some experience into the film world."

Muskogee is home to various historic filming sites that, according to Marshall, are great for film and TV.

"I think that's just an extra benefit of getting films in there because someone can go in there and shoot a whole documentary about Merle Haggard. The civic center, I think that would be great because you can shoot basketball movies there, and you can even do fight nights there."

Another main goal of Film Muskogee is to attract filmmakers and have them spend their money in the community.

"I think a lot of people don't put that in perspective a lot. People would need their customs dry cleaned and washed. They'll go to a local dry cleaners. People would want to go out and eat or cater for the whole crew. That's going to go back to the local economy."

Another goal of the department is to use the money brought in by filming to restore many of the older, vacant buildings in town.

"Honestly, the goal is to replenish many of the different buildings that have sat vacant for a long period of time because that money will fund the local economy and restore many of those buildings."
