Porsche Taycan 4S Sport Turismo (2022)
The Taycan Sport Turismo is the latest body variant of the innovative electric
The Taycan Sport Turismo is the latest body variant of the innovative electric sports car from Porsche. The model family now boasts a third design alongside the Taycan sports saloon and Cross Turismo. The new derivative is aimed at people who want to combine the everyday usability of the Taycan Cross Turismo with the on-road dynamics of the sports saloon. The first member of the Taycan Sport Turismo family, the GTS, will be launched at the end of February 2022, with further models following just three weeks later in mid-March 2022. A panoramic roof with Light Control is available as a new optional extra for the Taycan Sport Turismo. electric glare protection.
There are five models to choose from:
"The introduction of the Sport Turismo as the third body variant adds an athletic and practical all-rounder to our electric sports car model range," says Kevin Giek, Vice President Model Line Taycan. "I am certain that the new variant will continue the Taycan success story. The balance and variety among the five Sport Turismo models is something that I find particularly appealing: the range features everything from an incredibly agile rear-wheel drive car to the extremely powerful Turbo S."
From a standstill, the Porsche Taycan Turbo S Sport Turismo accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 2.8 seconds and its top speed is 260 km/h. The model with the greatest range is the Porsche Taycan 4S Sport Turismo, stretching to 498 kilometres based on WLTP figures.
The maximum charging capacity depends on which battery is used: up to 225 kW (Performance Battery) or up to 270 kW (Performance Battery Plus). Both batteries can be charged from five to 80 per cent in 22 minutes and 30 seconds. This also means that only five minutes' charging is needed to create 100 km of range.
Functional design with plenty of practical details
The Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo shares the sporty silhouette, rearward-sloping roof line and functional design of the Taycan Cross Turismo. In contrast to its sibling model, the Taycan Sport Turismo foregoes any off-road design elements. It is also available with rear-wheel drive.
The headroom in the rear is more than 45 millimetres higher than that of the Taycan sports saloon. An additional 9 mm of height is available above the driver's seat. The large tailgate means that the luggage compartment can be accessed with ease. The opening is much longer, at 801 mm, and much higher, at 543 mm, than in the saloon (434 and 330 mm respectively).
The precise capacity of the rear luggage compartment depends on the equipment fitted to the car, however. In combination with the Sound Package Plus, the luggage compartment can hold up to 446 litres (saloon: 407 litres). But with the BOSE® Surround Sound System on board (included as standard as of the Taycan Turbo Sport Turismo), it can hold 405 litres. With the rear seats folded down (split-folding 60:40), the luggage capacity increases to 1,212 or 1,171 litres respectively. And that's before the 84 litres in the front luggage compartment (frunk) are taken into consideration. The standard Storage Package includes bag hooks and restraining straps. These practical features help to keep the rear luggage compartment organised. A luggage compartment partition net is available on request.
Much development has gone into the cover for the luggage compartment. The shelf can be stowed behind the rear seats to save space.
The Sport Turismo can transport up to three bicycles with a special rear carrier, which is easy to use and compact when assembled. Its load capacity is 50 kilogrammes and the tailgate can still be opened when the rear-mounted carrier is loaded. A roof rail is available for both panoramic roofs in the Taycan Sport Turismo. Porsche Tequipment also offers roof boxes for all three Taycan body versions - including a performance model tested and approved for higher speeds.
Panoramic roof with Light Control: transparent or opaque at the touch of a finger
The new panoramic roof with Light Control has electric glare protection as a special feature. Unique in the automotive sector, the large glass surface is divided into nine sections that can be individually controlled. Specific sections or the entire roof can be made transparent or opaque. When set to the latter, the interior remains flooded with light. This new technology barely reduces brightness. As glare is prevented by the 'Light Control' function, the roof appears significantly brighter than the basic alternative. Twice as much light enters the interior.
Liquid crystals are contained in a film using PDLC (polymer-dispersed liquid crystal) technology. These crystals are supplied with power via electrical contacts. At low AC voltage, the crystals arrange themselves in milliseconds in such a way that the pane becomes transparent. Conversely, if the glass is disconnected from the power supply, the liquid crystals change to a disordered state. As a result, the pane turns opaque. Light Control is operated via the central infotainment display after the function has been selected on the touch panel.
In addition to the Clear and Matt settings, Semi or Bold can also be selected. These are predefined patterns with narrow or wide segments. It even has a dynamic Roller Blind setting, which activates a switching sequence in the individual segments when the Taycan driver slides their finger over an image of the roof in the display. When the vehicle is switched off, the glass automatically changes to its opaque state. The most recently used roof setting is saved for the next time the car starts up.
The innovative panoramic roof with Light Control has a multi-layered structure that shields against heat radiation so effectively that even in the transparent state the roof is better protected against heat than with a mechanical roller blind or conventional glass roof. Only 15 per cent of the heat enters the interior of the car, as proven by measurements in the solar simulation chamber at the Porsche Development Centre in Weissach. With conventional roofs, more than 30 per cent of heat radiation enters a car's interior.
A range of up to 498 kilometres based on WLTP figures
Being part of the latest Taycan generation, the all-wheel drive Sport Turismo models have a particularly efficient drive strategy. In Normal and Range driving modes, the front electric motor is almost completely disconnected and de-energised in the partial load range. When coasting and at a standstill, there is no drive torque on either axle. This electric freewheel reduces frictional drag losses. Only when the driver requests more power or changes the driving programme do the motors switch on again - and within milliseconds. Thermal management and charging functions have also been improved. As a result, for the first time, the 4S model with Performance Battery Plus achieves the greatest range of all Taycan models.
The efficient drive strategy enables a range of up to 498 km based on WLTP figures (specification for the Taycan 4S Sport Turismo with Performance Battery Plus). All range values are greater than those of the sports saloon. The background: the latest Taycan generation of sports saloon and Cross Turismo models have not been homologated separately, so there are no new range values based on WLTP figures for these vehicles. Nevertheless, technology optimisations in everyday use means that the operating range of these versions has increased as of Model Year 2022.
Entering and leaving a parking space via smartphone, on request
The PorscheTaycan Sport Turismo is also cutting edge in terms of comfort and safety features. With the optional Remote Park Assist, the driver can remotely control the car when it is entering and leaving a parking space via their smartphone - without being behind the wheel of the Taycan Sport Turismo. Automatic control is possible for parallel and perpendicular parking spaces as well as garages. The system automatically detects a space and measures it with the aid of ultrasonic sensors and a camera.
If the space is large enough, the driver can start the parking process via the Porsche Connect app and then get out of the car. They constantly monitor the parking process by pressing and holding a corresponding button on the smartphone's app interface. Active Parking Assistance independently takes over the steering as well as the forward and reverse motion of the vehicle. When the button is released, the Taycan Sport Turismo immediately stops the parking manoeuvre.
Apple Car Play and Android Auto are integrated into the infotainment system
Since its launch, the Taycan has been fitted with the sixth generation of Porsche Communication Management (PCM). This has made the electric sports car a pioneer in terms of connectivity, especially in its deep integration of Apple Music and Apple Podcasts. In addition to Apple Car Play, Android Auto has also been integrated into PCM since the last model year update. Now, in addition to iPhones, smartphones using the Google operating system - Android - are also supported. Selected phone functions and smartphone apps that do not impact driving safety can therefore be operated via PCM 6.0 or Google Assistant voice commands. Moreover, the Voice Pilot voice assistant is now even better at understanding instructions in normal speech. The navigation system calculates more quickly, primarily uses the online search to find points of interest (POI), and displays its information more clearly.
Drivers who don't want to use smartphone integration can now enjoy the direct integration of the Spotify streaming service in the Porsche Communication Management system, in addition to Apple Music®.
The layout and control concept have also undergone a slight revision: on the left side of the central display there are five menu entries, and these symbols can be arranged individually.
The Charging Planner has been further improved, is better at planning in fast-charging stations and avoids short charging stops. In addition, charging stations can now be filtered by performance class.
